More from Eric Mathiesen in Stavanger, Norway:
I made a search of Statistics Norway (http://www.ssb.no/norsk.html) to see how many people in Norway had the last name "Fruen" or any of the derivatives you mentioned (Frewin, Frewen, Fruin). According to them the names are mostly non-existant.
The "Frewin" type names do not sound Norwegian - especially spelled with a "w". Could they be German? The word "Freawine" certainly isn't Norwegian. The spellings could be Americanized variations of some of our difficult lettering (æ, ø, å).
I tried some different combinations and found out that there are 30+ people in Norway with the last name Frøen.
I also did a "people search" on one of the Norwegian sites - with no result (the site only lists registered members). Unfortunately, Norway does not publish the telephone listings.
Good Luck with your search.
