: My mother's maiden name was SILLAR, and her many-greats ancestor was one Walter Sillar, Sheriff of Stirling,1520; treasurer to Court of James V of Scotland. I was told that he changed his name to Sillar when Clan MacGregor was proscribed (whether because he dealt with money or "siller", or as the royal "Cellarer" or wine steward).
Is it true that the Clan MacGregor was proscribed? And if so, when? Was it not associated with the 1745 rebellion?
I would like more information!

My Grandmother on my father's side was a Seller changed from Siller. Her Mother was a Lee before she had her. I too have heard about the MacGregor Connection. I however am also new to this and am looking for information on Siller/Seller/Cellar. I understand there one Tartan that can't be commercially reproduced.

Look forward to any help or information.
